About the museum
The first museum in Głubczyce, the Museum of the Town and Głubczyce County (Muzeum Miasta i Powiatu Głubczyckiego), was established in 1910 in the building of a former gymnasium next to the Franciscan monastery. Its collections included, among other things, maps, paintings, gold coins, early printed books and the Code of Municipal Law from 1421. During the First World War the collections were taken to Nysa, returned to Głubczyce in 1922, and after the Second World War part of them was plundered and part went to museums in Racibórz and Opole.
Modern museum work in the town began in 2001, when the school Tradition Room (Izba Tradycji) at a school complex was turned into a School Museum with a statute approved by the minister of culture. In September 2008 the Głubczyce District Museum (Powiatowe Muzeum Ziemi Głubczyckiej) moved into the rebuilt town hall on the Market Square (Rynek), where it remains today. Cloth-hall chambers from the 13th century and a model of Głubczyce from the 18th century have also survived there.
The museum has departments of history, art, archaeology, ethnography and education. The permanent exhibitions present, among other things, the archaeology of the Głubczyce Plateau (“Prehistory of the Głubczyce Land”, opened in 2015), an exceptional bronze hoard from Jabłonka, more than three thousand years old, discovered in 2015, and the folk culture of the region together with souvenirs of repatriates from the Kresy (the former eastern territories). From the town hall tower, accessible all year round, visitors can reach the viewing terrace (from April to November).
