About the museum
The museum in Ustrzyki Górne was founded in 1991 as part of a network of centres for the history of mountain tourism, which had been built in the Polish Carpathians since the mid-1960s on the initiative of Edward Moskała. They were set up in the buildings of a former PTTK mountain hostel, closed in 1985. The official opening took place on 29 July 1991, and the first exhibits were brought from Kraków.
After 2004 the centre was taken over by the Wielkopolski Klub Przodowników Turystyki Górskiej PTTK im. Kazimierza Kantaka (Kazimierz Kantak Wielkopolska Club of PTTK Mountain Tourism Leaders), which renovated the building. From 2008 the centre has been subordinate to the Centralny Ośrodek Turystyki Górskiej PTTK w Krakowie (Central Mountain Tourism Centre of PTTK in Kraków), and its present name was given by a resolution of the PTTK Mountain Tourism Commission in 2016.
The exhibition occupies about 30 square metres in two rooms. The first tells of tourism in the Bieszczady after the Second World War, of the first post-war guides and maps, of mountain shelters and of the marking of the Główny Szlak Beskidzki (Main Beskid Trail). The second room, called the Eastern Room, is the most important part of the centre; it presents tourism in the Eastern Carpathians up to 1939, the activities of Polish tourist societies and the culture of the Hutsuls. A verification point for the Górska Odznaka Turystyczna PTTK (PTTK Mountain Tourist Badge) is also located at the centre.
