About the museum

The Museum of Armaments, a branch of the Greater Poland Museum of Independence, is located on the grounds of the former Winiary Fort in the Poznań Citadel. The Prussians built the fort in 1828–1842; the whole fortress covered about 100 hectares and was surrounded by a dry moat. After the Second World War the site served as a source of brick for rebuilding Poznań and Warsaw, and the remains of the fortifications were dismantled in the 1960s, when a 100-hectare park was laid out here. Within it are the Museum of Armaments and the Poznań Army Museum (Muzeum Armii “Poznań”).

The museum has existed since about 1965, and in 2025 it celebrated its 60th anniversary. The exhibition consists of an indoor part in the bunker of the former fort and an open-air part, where a dozen or so military vehicles and aircraft stand. On the square in front of the museum is a tactile model of Winiary Fort from 1914.

The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, outdoor events and historical reenactments, and part of its offer is aimed at families and seniors.
