About the museum
The first attempts to establish a museum in Koszalin were made by a German scientific society as early as 1879, but the objects collected were handed over to the museum in Szczecin in 1908. In 1910 the Regional Association for Local Studies and the Protection of Monuments (Związek Krajoznawczy i Ochrony Zabytków Regionu) was founded, which in 1912 organised the first exhibition in the Old Town Hall (ratusz staromiejski). This year is regarded as the beginning of the museum's activity. The Heimatmuseum operated until March 1945, and the Polish museum opened on 15 June 1947 in the building at today's ul. Piłsudskiego 53.
In the following years the institution changed its name and subordination: it was an archaeological branch of the Middle Pomeranian Museum (Muzeum Pomorza Środkowego), then an independent Archaeological and Historical Museum, and then a District Museum. The current seat is at ul. Młyńska 37–39, in the millers' house known as the Gellert House (kamienica Gellerta), built at the end of the 19th century, together with the former mill, which forms a wing of the building.
The museum complex also includes a fishing homestead from the village of Dąbki, a historic barn from the village of Paproty with the exhibition “Kuźnia pomorska” (Pomeranian Forge), and the building of the archaeology department with the exhibition “Pradzieje Pomorza” (Prehistory of Pomerania). The museum is run by the City of Koszalin, and its branch is the Zagroda Jamneńska (Jamno Homestead).
