About the museum

The Nysa District Museum is the oldest museum institution in Opole Silesia. It was founded in 1897 on the initiative of the Society for Art and Antiquities in Nysa, whose first chairman was Johannes Hellman. Initially it occupied four rooms in the former garrison’s old commandant’s office, and in 1916 it received the whole building. Before the war it had gathered around 33 thousand exhibits, including pewterware, glass and porcelain, militaria, sculpture and painting, liturgical vessels, and archaeological and ethnographic objects.

A flood in 1938 destroyed the building and many artefacts, and in 1941 the society was dissolved and its collections handed over to the town. In 1945 the most valuable exhibits were evacuated. After the war the museum rebuilt its collections, gathering objects from the area around Nysa, and in 1984 it moved to the Bishop’s Palace at ul. Biskupa Jarosława.

The Baroque palace was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries for the bishops of Wrocław. It is one of the most magnificent urban residences in the former Duchy of Nysa, with a two-storey structure around a rectangular courtyard, rich portals and polychromy with sundials. Today more than thirty rooms on three floors show, among other things, a gallery of Western European painting, Nysa applied arts, militaria, the prehistory of the Nysa Land and burgher interiors from 1860–1960.
