About the museum
The Prudnik Land Museum, a cultural institution of the Gmina Prudnik, was established in 1959 as a branch of the Opole Silesian Museum and has operated independently since 1968. Its seat, called the Arsenal, is at ul. Bolesława Chrobrego and adjoins the 15th-century town walls and two towers. In the Middle Ages weapons were stored here; later the historic buildings served as the town prison, and in the 19th century the larger tower was converted into a water tower supplying the town’s waterworks. Between the wars it housed a youth hostel, and during the occupation a Gestapo prison.
In 2001–2003 the building was renovated: the former third wing was rebuilt and the courtyard was covered with a glass roof. This created a large space for temporary exhibitions and events. The collections cover archaeology, ethnography, local history and art. A special place is occupied by bronze casting moulds from the Lusatian culture period, folk costumes and objects connected with the growing and processing of flax.
The permanent exhibitions present the multicultural history of Prudnik in the exhibition ‘Trzy źródła – jedno miasto’ (Three Sources – One Town) and in the exhibition ‘Spojrzenie przez gardinkę’ (A View Through the Net Curtain) on the changes after 1945. The corner tower shows militaria, including weapons from the Napoleonic Wars, and separate exhibitions are devoted to the cyclist Stanisław Szozda, the Prudnik textile factory and disappearing trades. The museum also includes a branch of the Centre of Weaving Traditions and the Hanna Bakuła Art Gallery.
