About the museum

Prudnik was formerly called the town of weavers and shoemakers. The greatest flourishing of the weaving industry took place in the 19th and 20th centuries, thanks to the Fränkl and Pinkus families, owners of one of the largest textile factories in Europe. The works employed several thousand people, and their owners were known as philanthropists, patrons of culture and bibliophiles. After the war and the change of borders the company was turned into the cotton works “Frotex” (Zakłady Przemysłu Bawełnianego “Frotex”), which was closed in 2011.

The Centre of Weaving Traditions opened at the turn of 2009 and 2010 as a branch of the Prudnik Land Museum, in an old tenement house at ul. Królowej Jadwigi 23. The conversion of the building was financed largely from the EU Czech Republic–Poland cross-border cooperation programme, and the project partner was the Czech town of Krnov, which also has textile traditions. After the liquidation of “Frotex” the museum took over a collection of around 1,500 exhibits.

The centre presents an exhibition on the former “Frotex” works and their pre-war owners, including a reconstructed room of Samuel Fränkl and the study of Max Pinkus. The institution runs weaving workshops, museum lessons and temporary exhibitions, as well as workshops on the Polish–Czech borderland, where young people from Prudnik and Krnov jointly cultivate the textile heritage. Visits are conducted with a guide at fixed entry times.
