About the museum

Since 2011 the Muzeum Współczesne Wrocław has been housed in a cylindrical, free-standing air-raid shelter at Plac Strzegomski, built in 1942 to a design by the architect Richard Konwiarz. The building has six storeys, thick reinforced-concrete walls and no windows. In 1945, during the defence of Festung Breslau, it served as a field hospital and was one of the few buildings in the area to survive the fighting.

After 1989 the shelter housed warehouses, supermarkets and a pub. Its new life was determined by its revitalisation and adaptation into a cultural institution, carried out by the studios CH+ Architekci and VROA Architekci. The raw, industrial character of the interiors was preserved: exposed reinforced concrete, traces of tools and unfinished floors.

At present, from the ground floor to level 5 there are permanent and temporary exhibitions, and there is an observation terrace on the roof. The museum presents and popularises contemporary art in Poland, and its permanent exhibition and research space is formed by the Jerzy Ludwiński Archive, after the museum’s informal patron.

From the stop at Plac Strzegomski a short ramp with a gradient of about 10% leads up, which some wheelchair users manage with a carer’s help. Each level can be reached by lift with Braille buttons, and there are no thresholds between the rooms. Most toilets have handrails and a call-for-help system. At the car park entrance you must ask for the barrier to be opened via the intercom; the car park has no marked spaces for people with disabilities. There are no induction loops in the building, and people with assistance dogs may move through all the public spaces.
