About the museum

The museum is housed in a classicist manor house from the 19th century, built by the Jabłonowski family to a design by Jakub Kubicki and rebuilt after a fire in 1904. Together with the chapel and the park, it forms a manor complex linked to Czarnolas, the home of the poet Jan Kochanowski (1530–1584). The landscape park, laid out in the English style in the first half of the 19th century by Józef Stich, was remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century by Stefan Celichowski.

The museum opened in 1961, initially with a hall and four rooms. From 1975 it was a branch of the museum in Radom, and since mid-February 2020 it has been an independent institution. In 2005, for the 475th anniversary of the poet’s birth, the Kochanowski family chapel was renovated and new exhibitions were shown.

The current permanent exhibition, “Jan Kochanowski – duch miejsca, klimat epoki” (Jan Kochanowski – Spirit of the Place, Atmosphere of the Age), presents the poet as a European writer who drew on Mediterranean and Christian models. It shows, among other things, a Cordovan-leather armchair and an iron door with a coat of arms, which may have belonged to the poet’s manor, as well as an interactive map of places connected with his life. Since 2020 the Ośrodek Informacji, Dokumentacji i Badań nad Życiem i Twórczością Jana Kochanowskiego (Information, Documentation and Research Centre on the Life and Work of Jan Kochanowski) has operated at the museum.
