About the museum
The Regional Museum in Janów Lubelski began its activity on 1 January 1986. For the first ten years it operated as a branch of larger museums, and since 1996 it has been an independent local-government institution.
The museum is housed in the Old Prison, built in 1825–1826 at ul. Ogrodowa. The building is being renovated step by step; since 2013 temporary exhibitions have been shown in partly renovated rooms, and part of the collections is kept in storage.
The institution collects items related to the archaeology, history, tradition, culture and art of the Janów region. It conducts field research, publishes, organises museum lessons and workshops, for example in pottery and basketry, and co-organises local events such as the Festiwal Kaszy (Groats Festival) and the Jarmark Janowski (Janów Fair).
