About the museum
The forest narrow-gauge railway in the Janów Forests ran in 1941–1984 between Biłgoraj and the village of Lipa, on tracks with a gauge of 600 mm. After the war up to six Las-type steam locomotives worked on the line, and later diesel rolling stock too. Operations ended in 1984, and the last section from Lipa to Szklarnia was dismantled in 1988.
Part of the rolling stock stood in the former depot at Szklarnia, where it deteriorated unsupervised. In June 1999 it was moved to Janów Lubelski and set up next to the forest district headquarters. The restoration work was carried out by the forest district in cooperation with the Polish Narrow-Gauge Railways Foundation (Fundacja Polskich Kolei Wąskotorowych), and the skansen was opened in October 2000.
The open-air exhibition includes a Las-type steam locomotive with its tender and a WLs50 diesel locomotive, as well as wagons: timber flatcars, a passenger wagon for workers, a tank wagon, a flatcar with a snowplough and a timber cradle wagon (kolebka). The site is run by the Janów Lubelski Forest District.
