About the museum

The beginnings of the collections date back to 1916–1917, but most of the exhibits were taken to Piła in 1935 and were considered lost. After the war, in 1956, an ethnographic competition of the Polish Folklore Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Ludoznawcze) and materials gathered by regionalists provided the first exhibits. The regional museum was approved in 1962, and in 1966 the reconstructed historic half-timbered house at ul. Wojska Polskiego 2a was opened to residents.

The building is one of the few surviving examples of 18th-century half-timbered town architecture in Krajna, with a brick ground floor, a half-timbered upper floor and a wide chimney of a black kitchen. The exhibition area covers 231 square metres in eight rooms, so less than half of the collection is available to visitors.

The archaeological, ethnographic, historical and art collections document the history of Krajna Złotowska, the struggle for the Polish language and the multicultural heritage of the region. The museum also runs the Galeria za Winklem at Paderewski Square, the Krajna Farmstead (Zagroda Krajeńska), the Chapel of Remembrance (Kaplica Pamięci) and an exhibition in the Złotów Granary (Spichlerz Złotowski).
