About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Szczecinku is one of the oldest museums in West Pomerania. It was established in 1914, but its museum traditions go back to 1866, when the retired Prussian major F. W. Kasiski organised a large archaeological exhibition in the Szczecinek armoury, using finds from his own excavations. His collection later went to Berlin. In 1913 a Museum Society (Towarzystwo Muzealne) was formed, and in 1935 the collections were moved to the castle.
The war caused enormous losses to the collections, because Soviet troops occupied the building and some of the exhibits were thrown out. After the war a civic committee revived the museum, which in 1947 received a temporary seat in the St Nicholas Tower (wieża św. Mikołaja). Today the institution operates in the building of the former Primary School No. 2 at 1 ul. Szkolna, and in 2026 it celebrates twenty years of work in this place.
The exhibition is divided into themed rooms. The Regional Room (Sala Regionalna) presents painting, sculpture and crafts related to the history of the town, and the sacred monuments of the region. The Noble Room (Sala Szlachecka) shows the material culture of Pomeranian noble families. The Garrison Room (Sala Garnizonowa) presents the history of the military in Szczecinek. More than a hundred historic objects connected with hunting are gathered in the Hunting Room (Sala Myśliwska), and the Silver Room (Sala Srebrna) holds more than a hundred silver products from European workshops of the 18th and early 20th centuries.
