About the museum

The idea of reviving a museum in Bobolice arose in spring 1990, on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the town receiving Lübeck town rights. Work on it began in 1999 on the initiative of a local ecological and cultural society. The premises chosen were the basement rooms beneath the Municipal and Communal Cultural Centre (MGOK) on Plac Zwycięstwa. For cost reasons the institution first operated as a museum room within the cultural centre, opening on 23 June 2002.

The room drew on the tradition of the pre-war Heimatmuseum and collected memorabilia of the town and the Bobolice area, both from the German period and items brought by Polish settlers after the Second World War. The collections were divided into sections: archaeology, ethnography, a gallery of contemporary painting and graphic art, town history and militaria. The museum also ran lessons for young people and lectures for adults and over time organised regular exhibitions of prison art (twórczość więzienna).

The town council transformed the room into a Regional Museum by resolution of 15 March 2013, and the institution continues to operate within the cultural centre. It then gained additional rooms on the first floor, where a gallery and the section “Prison Art” were set up, while the other sections remained in the basement. The museum was officially inaugurated in its new form on 29 June 2013.
