About the museum
The museum was established in autumn 1944, shortly after the liberation of Lublin, on the site of the former German Nazi concentration camp KL Lublin, founded in 1941. It is one of the oldest museums commemorating the victims of the Second World War. The institution is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
About 70 authentic structures from 1941–1944 have survived on the grounds: prisoner barracks, workshops and warehouses, SS staff buildings, bathhouses, gas chambers and the crematorium. The area of the former camp is the main element of the visit, and selected barracks are open with exhibitions. The dominant features of the site are the Gate-Monument and the Mausoleum containing the ashes of the victims.
The main historical exhibition, “The Prisoners of Majdanek”, tells the story of the inmates and the conditions of camp life. The museum also carries out research, educational and archival work. Since 2004 it has looked after the memorial site in Bełżec, and since 2012 the memorial site in Sobibór.
