About the museum
The Lusatian culture cemetery was discovered in January 1955 during the construction of a viaduct on Aleja Pokoju in Częstochowa. In the summer of that year eleven graves were secured, and after further excavations in 1960, when more burials were uncovered, the decision was taken to build a reserve. The reserve opened on 9 June 1965; the pavilion displayed part of the roughly eighty graves known at that time.
In 2001–2002 the building was renovated, and during the work five more graves were discovered; in 2003–2004 the finds and bone material were conserved. The reserve was reopened in 2004. In 2014, with funds from the Ministry of Culture and the city, the facility was modernised and adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.
Beneath the pavilion a cemetery of nearly one hundred square metres is preserved in situ, with cremation and inhumation graves from the Hallstatt period, dated to 750–550 BC. The exhibition “Z mroku dziejów” (“From the Darkness of History”) presents the economy, settlement, craftsmanship, beliefs and funeral rites of the people of the Lusatian culture. The reserve has a tactile model of the cemetery and a guidebook in Braille.
