About the museum
The Częstochowa Museum has its roots in the Hygiene Museum (Muzeum Higieniczne), which was housed in a pavilion built in Staszic Park in 1909 for the Exhibition of Industry and Agriculture. From 1976 to 1995 the institution was called the District Museum in Częstochowa (Muzeum Okręgowe w Częstochowie); today it operates as the Muzeum Częstochowskie, running more than a dozen sites in different parts of the city.
The Town Hall at al. Najświętszej Maryi Panny 45 was built in 1826–1834 as the seat of the authorities after the union of Old and New Częstochowa. The museum moved into it in 1967, and in 2006 the building underwent a thorough renovation. The Town Hall shows temporary exhibitions, as well as the permanent exhibition “Częstochowa – spojrzenie w przeszłość” (“Częstochowa – a Look into the Past”), which presents the history of the city and region from prehistory to the second decade of the 20th century. From the observation tower you can admire the panorama of the surroundings.
The permanent exhibition displays more than a thousand original archaeological, historical and natural objects, among them the remains of animals from the Ice Age, clay figurines from the Bronze Age, a bracelet of meteoric iron, the oldest documents about the city, a medieval sword and souvenirs from the Exhibition of Industry and Agriculture of 1909. The museum also includes, among others, the Galeria Dobrej Sztuki (Gallery of Good Art), the Muzeum Górnictwa Rud Żelaza (Iron Ore Mining Museum), the Rezerwat Archeologiczny (Archaeological Reserve), the Dom Poezji – Muzeum Haliny Poświatowskiej (House of Poetry – Halina Poświatowska Museum), the Stary Ratusz (Old Town Hall) and the Muzeum Żydów Częstochowian (Museum of the Jews of Częstochowa).
