About the museum
The match factory in Częstochowa was founded in 1881 by the German entrepreneurs Karol von Gehling and Julian Huch; it was the first match factory on Polish lands. Production was resumed after the First World War, in 1919, and in 1924 the plant was taken over by the State Match Monopoly (Państwowy Monopol Zapałczany). After a fire in 1930 the factory was modernised and equipped with a production line which has survived to this day.
The Museum of Match Production was set up in June 2002 at ul. Ogrodowa 68. It presents a historic machine park from the 1930s, on which the cycle of match production can be followed, as well as documents relating to the match industry. The site is part of the Silesian Voivodeship Route of Technical Monuments.
In two exhibition rooms there is the permanent exhibition “Rzeźby z jednej zapałki” (“Sculptures from One Match”) by Anatol Karoń, and a philumenic exhibition of matchbox labels from the interwar, post-war and contemporary periods. Visitors can also watch a documentary film about the fire at the factory in 1913. The factory has not produced matches since 2010.
