About the museum
The Halina Poświatowska Museum, now called the House of Poetry (Dom Poezji), is one of the sites of the Częstochowa Museum. It is located at ul. Jasnogórska 23, in the building where the Myga family, the poet's parents and siblings, settled after the war. Halina Poświatowska was born in Częstochowa in 1935 as Helena Myga. Her life was marked by a serious heart defect, long stays in hospitals and sanatoriums and operations in the United States. The house on Jasnogórska was a true haven for her, although she rarely stayed there.
The poet did not collect many everyday objects, so the exhibition rests above all on documents, photographs, letters and fragments of poems. The few keepsakes include the typewriter she brought from America and the painting “Nude with a Cat” by her husband, Adolf Poświatowski. The permanent exhibition lets the poet speak for herself: her poems accompany visitors from the threshold on, and enlarged photographs show her face and the successive stages of her life.
The exhibition emphasises the poet's favourite colours, her sensitivity to nature and art, and the themes of love and transience. It was prepared by Prof. Elżbieta Hurnikowa, and the museum also runs an educational programme and publishes works on Poświatowska's writing.
