About the museum

The neo-classical building at al. Najświętszej Maryi Panny 47 was built in 1875. It is called Popówka because it originally served as the house of the Orthodox clergy, later was the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop and then of the military authorities. It is now a building of the Częstochowa Museum, which also houses the museum’s directorate.

The building was handed over to the museum in 1973 and opened to visitors as the Gallery of Painting and Sculpture. Since 2013 the permanent exhibition “Sztuka polska XIX i XX wieku” (“Polish Art of the 19th and 20th Centuries”) has been on show here, presenting around 90 works from the collection of the Częstochowa museum.

The first three rooms are devoted to art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Young Poland (Młoda Polska), with paintings by, among others, Jan Stanisławski, Leon Wyczółkowski, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański, and sculptures by Antoni Madeyski and Konstanty Laszczka. The second part of the display covers art after 1918: the work of the interwar period and art after 1945. Apart from the permanent exhibition, the gallery organises temporary exhibitions.
