About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Pinhel has been housed on the ground floor of the Casa da Cultura, in the former Episcopal Palace, since December 2015. This residential building, with Baroque influence and classicist lines, began to be built at the end of the 18th century, during the time of Bishop D. José António Pinto de Mendonça Arrais, and later served a variety of purposes, including barracks, school and student residence. The Casa da Cultura opened on 25 August 2014, and the Museu José Manuel Soares is located on the first floor.
The route is evolutionary and presents the municipality in a modern museum language. It begins with reproductions of the rock paintings and engravings of Cidadelhe, in the Côa Valley, moves through the archaeological finds from Prado Galego and the Argomil milestone, dedicated to the Emperor Augustus, and reaches the medieval period, with interactive elements on the wars with León and Castile and military pieces such as a bascinet and a bombard.
This is followed by the sacred art section, with polychrome wooden sculptures from churches and chapels that no longer exist and a stone altarpiece in Ançã stone by João de Ruão, dated 1537, which belonged to the Church of the Misericórdia, as well as an exhibition of guild banners and the processional standards of the Corpus Christi procession. The visit ends in the present, with testimonies from people of Pinhel.
