About the museum
The Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Judaica Isaac Cardoso is a contemporary building in the former Jewish quarter of Trancoso, designed by the studio Gonçalo Byrne Arquitectos. It pays tribute to the Jewish physician Isaac Cardoso, born in Trancoso at the beginning of the 17th century, who was physician to the court of Madrid and took refuge in Verona, Italy, because of religious persecution.
The centre's mission is to preserve the Jewish legacy of the region and to be a place of study, reflection and knowledge about the Hebrew presence in the town. It includes exhibition rooms, a memorial to the victims of the Inquisition with the 515 names of prisoners from Trancoso, and the Beit Mayim Hayim synagogue, “Casa das Águas Vivas” (House of Living Waters).
The synagogue, inspired by the synagogue of Tomar, is entirely in wood, in contrast with the granite of the rest of the building; the four stylised columns represent the matriarchs of Israel, and on the ceiling a structure of light boxes evokes the twelve tribes. In 2013 the centre received a Sefer Torah, which returned to Trancoso five hundred years after the expulsion of the Jews ordered by D. Manuel I in 1496.
