About the museum
The Centro Interpretativo Ephraim Bueno inventories and documents the history of the Jewish presence in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. It pays tribute to Ephraim Bueno (1599–1665), a Jew born in Castelo Rodrigo who was a physician, physicist and writer, and who had a professional and social career of great importance at the court of the Netherlands.
The municipality preserves records and traces of the Jewish presence, to which the centre seeks to bear witness, drawing on royal documents such as the chancery records and on Inquisition proceedings brought against people from the area. The municipality also publishes a leaflet on the Jewish heritage of the town.
The centre is on Rua Dr. Ricardo Machado and can be visited every day; visits are arranged through the Posto de Turismo (tourist office) of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.
