About the museum
The church was built on the site of a small medieval pilgrimage church, and the present 16th-century building is the result of the wish of Vasco da Gama, a great devotee of Nossa Senhora das Salas. On the façade, beside the portal in the Manueline style, are the navigator's coat of arms and an inscription recalling this patronage. In the late 17th century it was altered, above all in its liturgical furnishings.
Inside, the gilded woodwork of the high altar, which holds the image of Nossa Senhora das Salas, and the azulejo panels with Marian themes stand out. The main highlight is the small museum where the church's treasure is displayed. The building has been a National Monument since 1922. It was closed for about two years for restoration works financed by the PRR (Recovery and Resilience Plan) and has since reopened.
