About the museum
The museum owes its origin to the doctor João da Cruz e Silva (1881–1948), who over decades assembled a collection of archaeology and numismatics and donated it to the municipality. The institution was founded before 1934.
Since 1972 it has been housed in the former Cadeia Comarcã, a 19th-century building designed by Chiapa Monteiro, on the Praça do Município, opposite the Câmara Municipal. The prison remained in use until the new courthouse was built in 1968; after conservation and adaptation works, the building opened to the public as a museum.
The collection includes archaeological pieces from the Palaeolithic to the medieval period (currently not on public display), a numismatic collection, a broad ethnographic display enriched by donations from people in the region, and decorative arts, ceramics, paintings, furniture, sculpture, textiles, documents and photographs. The education service promotes creative workshops in the rural parishes of the municipality and the activities “Os Sábados do Museu” (Saturdays at the Museum).
