About the museum
The Museu de Sines, opened on 24 November 2008 in the interior buildings of the Castle, is the centre for commemorating the history of Sines. The restoration cost €900,000, co-financed by European funds (FEDER), with scientific collaboration from Igespar. The Paço dos Governadores Militares (Palace of the Military Governors) houses the exhibition areas, the keep (torre de menagem) houses the House of Vasco da Gama, dedicated to the navigator born in Sines, and the other buildings of the castle have functions linked to the museum, education and culture.
The collection covers the history of Sines from the Palaeolithic to the 20th century. In the Casa-Forte on the ground floor, visitors can see the Tesouro do Gaio (Gaio Treasure), dating from the 7th century BC, of Phoenician origin and classified as being of public interest; the numismatic collection from the legacy of José Miguel da Costa, founder of the museum; and the Tesouro do Africano (African Treasure), found in Sines in 2012, with silver coins, some struck in America.
