About the museum
The Museu de Arqueologia de Alvalade opened to the public in June 2021, in the former Church of the Misericórdia, in the historic centre of the village. It fulfilled a long-standing aspiration of the Câmara Municipal de Santiago do Cacém, the parish council and the local community, and strengthened the municipality's Rota dos Museus (Museum Route) by decentralising the museum units across the territory. The project was co-financed by European funds through the Alentejo 2020 programme.
The museum covers the territory of the former municipality of Alvalade, which now corresponds to the parishes of Alvalade and Ermidas-Sado. The fertile valleys of the Sado and of the Campilhas and Roxo streams, rich in fishing and hunting, offered early conditions for human presence, and the remains gathered here document that occupation.
The permanent exhibition “Memórias da Terra, das Águas e dos Povos” (Memories of the Land, the Waters and the Peoples) takes visitors on a journey through the history of the territory through palaeontology, with fossils, and archaeology, with numerous finds. On the tablets available to visitors, an augmented reality application adds a digital narrative to much of the route. The exhibition received an honourable mention in the visitable collection category of the APOM Awards 2022.
