About the museum
The museum is housed in the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), next to the Igreja de São João Baptista (Church of St John the Baptist), in the historic centre of Campo Maior. The chapel, an example of popular Baroque architecture, was built in 1801 by the priest José Coelho Pereira, funded by donations from the local people.
The collection belongs to the Fábrica da Igreja (church fabric committee) of the parish of São João Baptista and brings together paintings, images, furniture and goldsmith work gathered from various churches in the municipality. The some 150 pieces document the popular religiosity of the people of Campo Maior between the 16th and 20th centuries.
The route tells the story of Jesus Christ and is organised in six themed spaces: the Sala da Paixão e Morte no Reino dos Céus (Passion and Death in the Kingdom of Heaven Room), the Sala da Natividade (Nativity Room), the Sala da Fé (Room of Faith, with martyrs and saints), the Sala das Vestes e da Ourivesaria (Room of Vestments and Goldsmith Work), the Sala de Nossa Senhora (Room of Our Lady) and the Jardim de Santa Bárbara (Saint Barbara Garden).
