About the museum
The Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art) is housed in the former Casa do Cabido (Chapter House), beside the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, the former cathedral of Elvas. The lack of a suitable space for the episcopal functions led the city's second bishop, D. António Matos de Noronha, to commission Pêro Vaz Pereira to build the building, whose first stone was laid in 1609. The works seen today, by José Francisco de Abreu, were carried out in the 18th century, during the time of Bishop D. Baltazar de Faria Vilas Boas.
The two-storey building has 18th-century architecture. The Sala Capitular (Chapter Room), where the dignitaries of the cathedral met, stands out: the marble altar in several colours, with an altarpiece of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the Italian marble medallions of the 18th century, and the original furniture, among which are two tables and two choir stalls made in 1762 by the Elvas woodcarver Francisco da Costa Leitão.
The Casa do Cabido was converted into a museum of sacred art. Its collection includes various liturgical objects from the diocese and some paintings by Luís de Morales.
