About the museum
The Fábrica-Museu da Ameixa de Elvas (Elvas Plum Factory Museum) occupies the former Frutas Doces factory, founded in 1919 in the historic centre of Elvas and acquired in 2017 by the company Sereno & Fonseca. The museum opened to the public in 2019, on the occasion of the factory's centenary.
The exhibition “100 Anos da Fábrica Frutas Doces” shows how a small factory of the early 20th century operated and how Elvas plum is made, using the traditional recipe of the convents. Visitors learn about the origin of the speciality, the importance of this activity for the development of the city and the history of the factory's former owners.
The factory has a shop, which sells Elvas plums and other regional products, and offers tastings. Plum production ended in 2025, but the company announced that the factory museum would remain open to the public.
