About the museum
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas (MACE) opened in 2007 under the Câmara Municipal de Elvas, with the aim of strengthening the city's cultural offer and creating a regional, cross-border, national and international dialogue through contemporary art.
The museum holds on deposit the Coleção António Cachola, a private collection of exclusively Portuguese art with no disciplinary, thematic or aesthetic limits, covering works from the 1980s to the present day. It is considered one of the most important private collections in Portugal and in 2016 received the “A” Prize for Private Collecting from the Fundación ARCO.
The MACE occupies the former Misericórdia hospital, a building of great architectural value in the historic centre of Elvas. The conversion project preserved the building's structural elements and spatial quality, and the windows at street level connect the interior with the outside and act as a showcase for the exhibitions. The auditorium, also called the Salão Nobre (grand hall), retains blue and white azulejo panels from around 1740.
