About the museum

The Museu Militar de Elvas (Elvas Military Museum) came about from the restructuring of the Portuguese Army in 2006, when Infantry Regiment No. 8, the last military unit based on the site, was disbanded. A museum was created in the same space to show part of the Army's museum and heritage collections.

The museum occupies the Quartéis do Casarão (Casarão Barracks), former premises of the military units that passed through Elvas, adapted as a museum branch, and is part of the Portuguese Museum Network. The route includes the cloister of the former Convento de São Domingos and the Fonte de São José (St Joseph's Fountain), and it is one of the largest museums in the country.

The collections cover the history of the Army Health Service, horse-drawn vehicles and military harnesses, and Army vehicles. The Centro Interpretativo do Património de Elvas (Elvas Heritage Interpretation Centre), dedicated to the history and heritage of the city, also operates within the museum.
