About the museum
The Casa da Memória Judaica da Raia Sabugalense opened on 12 March 2017 on the Largo do Castelo, in the former Casa do Castelo building in the historic centre of Sabugal. It is part of the project Rotas de Sefarad – Valorização da Identidade Judaica Portuguesa no Diálogo Interculturas, co-financed by the EEA Grants and the Município do Sabugal, and was validated by the Direção Regional de Cultura do Centro (regional directorate of culture) and the Rede de Judiarias de Portugal (Network of Jewish Quarters of Portugal). The municipality acquired the building, which was rehabilitated, and the museum project was developed by the company EON, Indústrias Criativas.
The building has two floors, and the explanatory panels show the link of this border region to Jews and crypto-Jews, that is, baptised Jews who practised their faith in secret, between the 15th and 18th centuries. Visitors also see some pieces related to the past of the house and of the historic centre of Sabugal. The exhibition is organised around themes such as “Naqueles tempos” (In Those Times), the Jewish commune in Sabugal, the Inquisition, the cross-shaped marks and “Um armário, muitas histórias” (A Cupboard, Many Stories).
On the ground floor a documentary is shown on the presence and life of the Jewish community of Sabugal, which received the film award of the Associação Portuguesa de Museologia in 2018. Sabugal sits on the board of the Rede de Judiarias de Portugal.
