About the museum

The Casa-Museu Manuel Ribeiro de Pavia is in the centre of the village of Pavia, in the municipality of Mora, next to the Anta-Capela de São Dinis. It is dedicated to the life and work of Manuel Ribeiro de Pavia, who was born in the village, and displays paintings, original drawings, reproductions and books illustrated by this artist from the Alentejo.

The neo-realist illustrator was born and died on 19 March, dying at the age of 50 in a boarding-house room in Lisbon. Little inclined towards easel painting, he created covers and illustrations for writers of his time, such as Alves Redol, Fernando Namora, Antunes da Silva and Domingos Monteiro, as well as for publishers such as Portugália, Guimarães, Inquérito and the Sociedade de Expansão Cultural.

The exhibition is organised around the themes “Príncipe sem vintém…”, “O Alentejo”, “O Sonho” and “África!”. The house museum opened on 16 June 1984, thanks to collaboration between the Câmara Municipal de Mora, the Junta de Freguesia de Pavia and friends of the painter.
