About the museum
The Centro Ciência Viva de Bragança is part of the national network of Ciência Viva centres and opens to the public with a programme of exhibitions, activities and experimental workshops. The main building is a modern structure built on the site of the former hydroelectric plant which, from the early 20th century until the sixties, used the power of the Fervença river to produce electricity for the town. Today it is an intelligent, eco-efficient building with its own 50 kW micro-hydroelectric plant, which makes it energy-autonomous for much of the year.
The Casa da Seda, the centre's second space, occupies a restored building that was once a cereal mill powered by the waters of the Fervença river, and a silk dyeworks. Trás-os-Montes' connection with silkworms goes back at least to the 15th century, and it was probably here that silkworms were first raised in Portugal for the production of silk.
The multimedia exhibition at the Casa da Seda revives this memory and allows visitors to follow the life cycle of the silkworm, set an old silk factory in motion in an augmented-reality game, and pull a thread to discover more about this industry. The centre also offers travelling exhibitions, workshops, field trips and programmes for schools.
