About the museum
The Museu Ibérico da Máscara e do Traje opened in February 2007 as a cross-border cooperation project between the territories of Bragança and Zamora, in a partnership between Bragança Municipal Council and the Diputación de Zamora. It is housed in an old house within the Citadel of Bragança.
The museum presents the traditions linked to the masks of north-eastern Trás-os-Montes and the province of Zamora, in particular the caretos and the winter festivals that have been passed down from generation to generation on both sides of the border. The collection includes costumes and masks from various Portuguese and Spanish localities, made by local craftsmen.
The exhibition occupies several floors, and the upper floor is dedicated to the work of the craftsmen.
