About the museum
The museum commemorates the Ribadelago disaster: in the early hours of 9 January 1959 the Vega de Tera dam burst and the waters swept away the village, where 144 of its 532 inhabitants died. After the tragedy a new village, Ribadelago Nuevo, was built, with a monument in memory of the victims.
The centre occupies the former town hall, a historic two-storey building with a lift. It opened thanks to the collaboration of the Diputación Provincial de Zamora (provincial council), the Asociación Hijos de Ribadelago and Galende Town Council.
The permanent exhibition brings together information panels, plans, documents from the period, an audiovisual presentation and numerous photographs of the breach of the dam. A separate space hosts temporary exhibitions by artists and craftspeople.
