About the museum
The Ecomuseu Terra Mater is the first ecomuseum of the Terra de Miranda and operates in the village of Picote, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro. It began operating in 2010 as an interpretation centre and reopened in 2023 in a restored traditional house. It is run by Associação Frauga, an integrated development association of Picote, and forms part of a project supported by the Norte 2020 programme.
The museum aims to bring visitors closer to nature and to present the natural heritage and intangible culture of the region, including the Mirandese language and local traditions.
The permanent exhibition room presents the past of Picote and the history of human settlement in the territory, and the activities are organised around the four elements: water, earth, fire and air.
