About the museum
The Museu da Terra de Miranda was founded in 1982 by Father António Mourinho, a scholar of Mirandese culture. It is housed in a monumental 17th-century building on Praça D. João III, in the historic centre of Miranda do Douro, which served as the town hall and municipal prison until the 1970s.
The collections bring together cultural, ethnographic and artistic testimonies of rural life in the region, from prehistory to the present day. The ethnography display includes Mirandese costumes, the tools used to make them, agricultural implements and traditional masks.
The museum is under the supervision of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal and is closed for renovation works financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Reopening is planned for the last quarter of 2026, but no date has yet been announced.
