About the museum
The Museo Baltasar Lobo is dedicated to the sculptor from Zamora, Baltasar Lobo, born in Cerecinos de Campos on 22 February 1910 and one of the most prominent Spanish sculptors of the 20th century. From the age of twelve, Lobo trained in a religious sculpture (imaginería) workshop in Valladolid. He later studied in Madrid, at the School of Fine Arts and at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. During the Civil War he went into exile in France, where he received support from Picasso and Henri Laurens.
The museum occupies the Casa de los Gigantes, a building among the former defences of Zamora castle that was used to store the gigantillas (giant figures) and is now dedicated to art. Across its two floors a significant part of the work donated to the city is displayed: drawings, photographs, work tools and more than fifty works. Together with the pieces shown in the castle gardens and along the Liza walkway, the ensemble comprises 73 works by the sculptor.
The museum's website arranges Lobo's work by chapters: his years of training in Zamora, Valladolid and Madrid, the years of war and Mujeres Libres, and his exile in France. Besides the Casa de los Gigantes, the visit includes open-air sculptures in the castle park, in the León Felipe park and in the Plaza de Zorrilla.
