About the museum
The Espaço Memória e Fronteira is housed in the former municipal slaughterhouse building in Melgaço, which was remodelled and extended in 2007. It is one of the spaces of the Rede Melgaço Museus (Melgaço Museums Network) and is dedicated to preserving the recent history of the municipality, above all emigration and smuggling.
One room deals with smuggling, which forced many people from Melgaço to live in hiding. Along a ramp, the exhibition depicts the stages of illegal emigration in the 1960s and 1970s: the causes, the preparation of the journey, the journey itself, the arrival and life in the host country, as well as the impact of emigration on the territory. It is a social portrait of the hundreds of local people whom Melgaço saw leave.
The space also has an assistance office for emigrants and immigrants. It can be visited on its own or with the combined ticket of the Rede Melgaço Museus.
