About the museum
The Casa Museo Etnográfico Pazo da Cruz is installed in a large Galician house of the 16th century, in the parish of A Hermida (Covelo). The complex itself is part of the visit, because it preserves its original elements: a gateway with a cross and pinnacles, a cobbled courtyard, vineyards, a hórreo (granary), the servants' house, the eido (yard), a stone bread oven, the lareira (hearth) and the parrumeira. Inscriptions on the stones, such as Masonic signs or crosses on the oven covers, help to read its history.
The collection is the result of the collecting work of its owner, the writer and entrepreneur Maximino Fernández Sendín (Oviedo, 1950), and brings together more than 4,000 pieces and more than 3,000 graphic and audiovisual documents, which keep growing. The museum offers a visit where one can smell, touch and feel, with the aim of gathering, conserving, researching and disseminating the historical, ethnographic and natural heritage of the area and of Galicia.
Among the spaces, a school and a hairdresser's from the 1950s stand out, as well as the permanent exhibition on the history of bread, mills, ovens and cereals. In the eido one can see and touch seventeen medicinal plants, fruit trees and a six-foot hórreo. The house is also the seat of the Centro de Estudios de A Paradanta y O Condado and of the Premios Cumbres del Suido.
