About the museum
The Ponteareas municipal museum occupies the building of a former tannery, which it shares with the municipal library. The exhibition follows a chronological order, from prehistory to the contemporary history of the municipality.
The first section brings together remains from the Castro de Troña hillfort, from the Galician-Roman period, as well as the Chan de Gándara rock carving (petroglyph) and Roman bronzes found at Coto de Altamira (Taboexa, As Neves), including the figure of a togate man. From the Middle Ages survives a large Romanesque baptismal font.
The contemporary history section is devoted to people born in Ponteareas in the political, social and cultural spheres, such as Gabino Bugallal, Fermín Bouza Brey and the musician Reveriano Soutullo. A special space recalls the town’s most important festival, Corpus Christi, with its flower carpets. Since 1998 the museum has also housed the Centro de Recuperación de Cultura Popular (Centre for the Recovery of Popular Culture), which is installed in the castle of Sobroso, seven kilometres away.
