About the museum

The Museu de Cinema de Melgaço – Jean Loup Passek was opened in 2005 by the then Minister of Culture, Isabel Pires de Lima. It is housed in the historic centre of the town, in a former Guarda-Fiscal building that the municipality bought and adapted for the purpose. It is unique in the country and is part of the Melgaço Museus network.

The museum's core is the collection that the French critic Jean-Loup Passek gathered over about five decades and donated to the municipality. Passek headed the cinema department of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and was director of the La Rochelle film festival. The collection includes thousands of posters and photographs, equipment from the silent era and more recent apparatus.

The permanent exhibition on the ground floor is devoted to pre-cinema and shows magic lanterns with hand-painted glass slides, phenakistiscopes, zoetropes and praxinoscopes, as well as posters illustrating the evolution of film up to the Lumière brothers' cinématographe. In the Sala do Novo Mundo, visitors can see and handle replicas of optical toys, a peep-show and an optical box for a theatre diorama. A small auditorium screens films linked to the temporary exhibition, which occupies the first floor.
