Espaço Memória

About the museum

The Espaço Memória opened to the public on 28 June 2014 in the Barreiro Business Park. The Câmara Municipal wanted to bring together in one place three structures that already promoted the city's heritage: the Galeria Municipal de Arte (Municipal Art Gallery), the Reservas Museológicas Visitáveis (visitable museum storage) and the Arquivo Municipal (Municipal Archive). The result is a shared house of memory for Barreiro.

The exhibition component is based on archaeological collections and other bequests or deposits made to the municipality and presents, in an interactive exhibition, the city's various productive sectors and the people who, through their work and their social and political action, shaped its history. A consultation room allows visitors to research the written, photographic, sound and video documentary holdings. The Fundo de História Oral (Oral History Fund) brings together first-person interviews on important themes and events in the history of Barreiro.
