About the museum
The Ecomuseu Municipal do Seixal was born in 1982 as the Museu Municipal do Seixal, housed in the Torre da Marinha in Arrentela, and adopted the name Ecomuseu in 1983. It is based on the dynamic conservation of heritage, wherever possible in its original place, and on the participation of communities. It comprises five museum units and three extensions spread across the municipality.
The Núcleo Naval was created and opened to the public in 1984, on the site of a former shipyard in Arrentela of the Sociedade de Reparações e Construções Navais, which operated until the end of the 1970s. Its mission is to preserve and publicise the memory of shipbuilding and maritime life in the municipality, in its relationship with the Tagus estuary, where fishing, the building of wooden boats, river traffic, tidal milling and, later, industry are highlighted.
After its requalification, it was open from 2005. It later closed for conservation works and reopened in May 2023 with the renewed long-term exhibition “Barcos, Memórias do Tejo” and a temporary exhibition on the frigates of Seixal. It has a long-term exhibition room and a workshop space, and next to the building, in the tidal zone, lies the ruin of the frigate Cravidão, one of the types of vessel that sailed the Tagus until the mid-20th century.
