About the museum
MUVET opened on 23 February 2018 at the headquarters of the Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Badajoz. The date commemorates the founding of the Real Colegio-Escuela de Veterinaria in Madrid on 23 February 1792, and the constitution in Badajoz of the Asociación Extremeña de Veterinarios on 23 October 1894, the forerunner of the colleges of Cáceres and Badajoz. The museum pays tribute to them.
Its two aims are teaching and the promotion of the veterinary profession. The museum is organised into two routes. The first runs from the Neolithic Revolution to the 19th century and passes through Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Far East, Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, scientific thought and the first veterinary schools. The second begins with María Cerrato, the first Spanish woman veterinarian, who welcomes visitors to the 20th century and the founding of the Badajoz college.
The permanent exhibition hall is divided into three areas: animal health, animal husbandry and animal welfare, and public health. It displays a wide collection of veterinary instruments, including microscopes, ear-tag applicators, tattooing devices, stethoscopes, syringes and clinical instrument cases. There is also a room for temporary exhibitions and interactive resources.
