About the museum
The Museu de Etnografia de Serpa opened in 1987 in the building of the former municipal market, opened in 1889, on Largo do Corro, next to the Portas de Sevilha (Seville Gate). The square, which appears on plans from the 15th century, served in the 19th century as a daily market and, during festivities, as a bullring, which gave it its name.
In the 1980s the building was restored by the studio of the architect Alfredo Saldanha and adapted as a museum to house one of the most extensive collections of objects, artefacts and costumes linked to the ethnography of Baixo Alentejo, some one thousand pieces. The museum closed in 2019 for a thorough refurbishment and reopened in October 2025.
