About the museum
The Museu do Relógio (Clock Museum) opened to the public in 1995 in the Convento do Mosteirinho in Serpa, a Manueline building from the 16th century. It is a private museum owned by the Tavares d'Almeida family and presents itself as a unique institution in the country. A noble room of the convent was later added to the permanent exhibition.
The collection comprises over 2300 pieces, all mechanical, from 1630 to the present day: pocket watches, wristwatches and table clocks, among others. The museum occupies ten rooms, with Alentejo terracotta tile floors contrasting with whitewashed walls and vaults. One of the rooms shows clocks of national origin and hosts temporary themed exhibitions. Among the brands represented are Patek Philippe, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breitling and A. Lange & Söhne.
The museum also has a small garden, a bar and a library with more than 600 books on the subject. There is a restoration workshop, where master watchmakers repair pocket watches, wristwatches, table clocks and wall clocks, and a shop. The collection continues in Évora, at the Museu do Relógio – Polo de Évora, housed in the Palácio Barrocal, next to the Praça do Giraldo.
