About the museum
The Núcleo Museológico do Mosteiro, opened in 2011, occupies a former place of worship in the small village of Mosteiro, about 20 km north of Mértola. The building stands on the site of a Roman villa, is mentioned in documents from the 15th century onwards, and has even older origins.
In the 1980s, already badly deteriorated, it was acquired by the municipality and restored by students of the Escola Profissional Bento de Jesus Caraça, in Mértola. The project aimed to connect the history of the place with the people who live there: alongside architectural elements, the unit displays ethnographic objects donated by residents, which strengthens bonds of identity and the preservation of collective memory.
